there is a difference between applying for work and applying yourself for work. you have to bug them at least once every 2-3 days. they remember (more less take notes) every time you call or go in to check on your app. always ask for the hiring manager and be polite.

Resume(s)
Resumes in today's market are essential. Critiquing your resume is a never ending job. Read many books, listen to many audio books, ask anyone and everyone to take a look at it. Most people will just say it looks good, so take it to someone who will give you advice. If the advice is against what the books and tips online are saying, don't take it to heart.
With the internet and library there are millions of resources to help make your resume stand out. Also the 15-25 cents on actual resume paper makes a world of difference too.
Cover letters are also a nice touch, but in my experience a well put together resume is far more than most people even try.
